I must say that the fat man is doing pretty good at this show. It's too bad that he couldn't stay sober enough to convince Bruce to break is contract and join the band. Bruce WANTED to, but ole Jer was too far gone. It should've been Keith > Brent > Bruce. Maybe the fatman could've lived longer. DOH!

As many have mentioned, this was a first-rate performance with too many highlights to list ..... just turn it on and forget about it.

Noticed from dead.net that this show marks the final performances of"C.C. Rider" and "Takes A Train", each of which are definitive versions.

Tons of energy, tons of soul, breathtakingly entertaining.

R.I.P Jerry

Subject: where's the AUD of this concert...
I know it exists, I had it on tape shortly after this show. Agreed, most of the Spectrum shows in the final years were low in volume for the first set, and gradually picked it up towards the end. The audience recording of this show does it more justice. It's a bit painful to hear the boys' raw harmonies w/o the audience feedback. This was a solid show, with some nice nuances...including the CC Rider>Lot to Laugh. but those nuances are lost in the glaring reality of this soundboard recording.

Subject: good sound
good sound, decent performance, especially considering the date. jerry does sound pretty good. however, the good sound serves to underscore how impotent the band sounded with vince on keyboards. so the whole experience is bittersweet...

I was at this show and despite some sound problems mainly volume, this was the peak of the second coming of the Grateful Dead. I think the band were all clean and firing on all cylinders at this point. If you listen to the music it's really tight. Great show, sounds as good as I remember it.

Subject: Great sound!
This show sound-wise is wonderful. 1st set is really rockin' and solid. Corrina is strong with Jerry really getting into the chorus parts, Scarlet>Fire is rocky at times. Estimated is average. That horn synth part Vince used to play on EVERY Estimated really is annoying. Watchtower is average, Dew is above average, Jerry really gets goin at times. Johnny B. Goode is....well, it's Johnny B. Goode.

factman: I have retracted my statement about Phil bombing the Spectrum. I was not at this show. The sound quality of this recording does sound very good, with lots of low end, that is what I meant to say. However, I was at the Palace shows at the end of this tour, and by then they had turned it up good 'n' loud

Subject: Thanks
Thanks to Jonathan for seeding this show. It was my first and I have been looking for it for a long time. The sound is great. There are some lyric flubs and some of the songs are a bit flat, but it means something to me. So thanks for putting it out there.

dmilks, unless you were at this show and near (within 30 feet of) the PA stacks, I must dispute the notion of Phil bombing the hell out of the Spectrum. The whole run, with this show in particular, was possibly the quietest batch of music I've ever seen. I was in the tapers' section all three nights, and the crowd (conversation, not singing along or cheering) was louder than the band. Halfway through the first set, a few pockets of people would start "turn it up" chants. My mantra regarding this run for some time was, "If you take the first night's first set, and the last night's second set, you'd have an OK show." Out of all three shows available here, I recommend this show's first set only. It gives a sense of "what might have been". Plus you get the final installment of C.C.-> Train 2 Cry, which 'taint bad. I may notch my rating up by one star once I take a hard listen to the sound.
